Let’s find out in our latest Haier portable washing machine review.
A Little About Haier
Haier is a company that was originally founded around 34 years ago in Qingdao, China.
It is a company that is constantly striving to change, evolve, and innovate, with a view to leading future lifestyles and providing improved performance through new services, products, technologies, and concepts.
The company’s line of portable washing machines is among some of the best on the market.
Haier HLP21N Pulsator – What is it?
There are a lot of portable washing machines out there (you can see which portable washers we love in our guide). This Haier portable washing machine is an incredibly lightweight model, which means it is very easy to transport.
As we’ve established, if you are short of space, but want to benefit from the functionality and ease of a tiny washing machine, this might be the best option.
In order to determine whether this Haier portable washer is the right appliance for you, we need to look at it more closely.
In the following review, we will consider the key features, how it compares to others on the market, and its various pros and cons.
Key Features of the Haier HLP21N
It goes without saying that a washing machine, in its simplest form, should be able to wash clothes and other appropriate materials and rinse them off sufficiently to allow you to dry them using the method available to you.
All washing machines do just that – wash fabrics and clothing. However, the key features beyond the simple washing and rinsing of clothes can vary somewhat from brand to brand and model to model.
Therefore, to understand just how good or bad the Haier HLP21N Pulsator is, it is important that we look at some of the standout features of this appliance.
Extremely Portable and Lightweight
Portable by name, portable and lightweight by nature.
It weighs an extremely light 43-pounds, making it one of the lightest portable washers on the market.
Particularly when you compare it to models like the Avanti TLW16DOW, which weighs around 82-pounds or another Haier washer, the HLP24E, which weighs at 61-pounds.
So, when we say it’s one of the lightest on the market, we aren’t lying or exaggerating things.
Of course, portability is more than just about how heavy or light an item is. You also have to consider the size. The dimensions for this Haier portable washing machine are 32.5-inches high, 17.6-inches wide, and 17.3-inches deep. This makes it very easy to store, even if you have little to no space.
Another aspect of portability is how easy it is to live and move around. The addition of rolling casters on this Haier 1 Cu. ft. portable washer helps with this.
All of the above is obviously important when you consider the problem we raised at the outset. You have an apartment or another type of property that is lacking in the space department. Certainly not enough for a traditional, full-size washing machine.
That’s where this Haier washer is a real winner. But, what else is worth discussing about it?

You will find that most portable washing machines are fairly easy to set up. That is no different with this Haier 1 Cu. ft. portable washer, as it can be done in just a few simple steps.
With the included hook-ups you can connect it directly up to the bathroom or kitchen sink, with relative speed and ease. No need to call out a tradesman or a plumber. You just simply add the connector and position the drain hose inside the sink before you begin any of the washing cycles.
Even if you are well-versed in plumbing-in and setting up washing machines if you have a busy lifestyle and work schedule, do you really want to have to worry about all that?
Choosing a model like this Haier portable washer will save you the worry and hassle. Remember that the whole point is to be portable – if you are having to hard-plumb this in, then you are after something space-saving rather than portable.
Three Wash Cycles
The Haier portable washer has three wash cycles. Although you could argue that this is better than none, there are a lot of other models available that offer a lot more, for a similar price.
Furthermore, the fact that the drum spins at a maximum of 700 RPM, which is a little below the average of many other portable washers available, might put you off.
Having said that though, it does spin fast enough to remove moisture from your clothing, making it easier when it comes to drying your garments. Which is still great for a washing machine this small and portable.
While we did say that it is easy to set up and use this machine, the fact that the wash cycles and waster settings are a little vague and hard to understand might put you off.
That really depends on whether you need an all-singing, all-dancing model or not. If you are just looking for something that will wash your clothes and not complain about the smell, this is for you.
Though, you should consider the hassle it might cause when you are trying to get to grips with it, giving that the settings can be tricky.
Inexpensive Running Costs
Another important consideration, particularly if you are trying to keep both your carbon footprint low and the costs you have to pay out on electricity in your new place, is how expensive or inexpensive your chosen washing machine is.
With the Haier HLP21N, it’s not very clear-cut. On one hand, it is estimated that the Haier washer could use around 214-kilowatts of electricity over the course of a year if it is used a “normal” amount. That could cost you roughly $23 annually.
What does that mean in terms of running costs on a monthly basis? It works out at about $1.92 a month. Now, we know that is a little higher than some of the more energy-efficient models available
However, it is still definitely a lot less expensive than lugging all your dirty clothes to and from the laundromat.
Haier HLP21N Mini Washing Machine Price Comparison
One of the best things, along with looking at the key features, is to look at how the Haier 1 Cu. ft. portable washer compares to others on the market.
The Haier model actually holds up rather well, as it is a fraction of the price of some of the most popular portable washing machines on the market.
The GE WSLP1500HWW, for example, is about 800 bucks more expensive, while the Kenmore 4442 is a couple of hundred bucks more expensive.
Is It Good Value for Money?
Whether the Haier washer is good value for money is also an important consideration to make.
Determining that involves working out really what you want and need from this kind of appliance. If you are not fussed about it having all the wash cycle choices and want to save as much money as you can, because of a tight budget. this one might be better.
We already spoke of how it is less cost-effective than others on the market. Take, for instance, the Kenmore 44422. This will cost you around 12 bucks a year to run, which is lower than the Haier model.
However, as the Kenmore is a more expensive appliance from the outset, you have to weigh that up when making your decision.
Are There Downsides?
No product is ever completely perfect and while there is a lot that this Haier 1 Cu. ft. washing machine has going for it, there are also some downsides that need to be addressed.
Going back to the fact that it only has three different wash cycles, compared to other models this is not very good at all.
Especially as there is a lack of a soak cycle or even a delicate wash. This might be an okay trade-off considering just how lightweight and portable the machine is.
However, if you wear and use items with delicate materials, then it is worth considering alternatives.
Another major downside of this washing machine is the fact that it only has a signal that tells you the machine has finished its cycle.
There is no detergent dispenser, no delay starts to allow you some flexibility when programming it and no time-remaining indicator.
While it’s not imperative that it has any of these functions and options, they are nevertheless ideal for making it a little easier to use.
When downsizing with a product like this certain trade-offs need to be made with regards to functionality and usability.
We are glad you’ve stuck with us this far into the review. We hope you can see the benefit of taking the time to look at it more closely.
It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a perfect washing machine. But then if you were hoping for a portable washing machine to be perfect, we would have to say that you were already hoping for something that didn’t exist.
However, the Haier HLP21N has more than enough plus points in its favor compared to the downsides against it. Whether it’s right for you depends really on what you need, what you want, what you are prepared to live with and what you can and can’t live without when it comes to a portable washer.
If you have only ever been interested in a portable and lightweight washing machine that will keep your clothes in the land of the fresh smelling, but don’t want to spend too much for the privilege, this is for you.
So too is it if you are not looking for one that is simple to install and doesn’t require a lot of fiddling with settings. There are, after all, only three wash cycles.
However, if you are looking for one that has more intricate and detailed cycle choices and settings, then you might have to look elsewhere.
Bottom Line – In our opinion, this is a great, affordable and incredibly lightweight washing machine.
The Haier washer benefits from being reasonably cost-effective enough for its size and price that it will still save you money in the long run, not least of all because you won’t have to go to the laundromat every time you want to wash your clothes.
